How did Tomahawk USA get started? The year was 1984. A couple of college buddies were working their way through school. They start out by purchasing a pressure washer on a cart with two wheels and a small utility trailer. Their main customers were mobile home owners in local San Diego mobile home parks. Within a year they were the holders of the largest fleet vehicle contract in the County, San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E). What started as a two man operation and a trailer with a pressure washer turned into vans with a pressure washer, hundreds of feet of hoses, buckets, brushes etc The hodgepodge of equipment clustered their van. The washing and drying of the vehicles took lots of time. . Their Crews would wash every night just to keep up. One day it became clear that they would either have to ask for more money per vehicle and hire more crews in order to keep up, or find a better way. That prompted the creation of the completely mobile, compact, spot-free system that is known as the Original Tomahawk today. The hoses were neatly arranged on reels, a utility tray stored the soaps and buckets etc. But most importantly the water quality control monitor kept track of the spot free water DI tanks and gave them the maximum run without having to worry about spotting the vehicles. Where did the name Tomahawk USA come from? Lots of people ask us, "Did you name your company after the Cruise Missile?" And as cool as that sounds, I have to tell them no. Of course, the origin of the word Tomahawk is from Native American peoples and means; "A light ax used as a tool or weapon." Is this what the Tomahawk name came from? Well, not exactly. Perhaps you think the name was inspired by the 1951 western movie. No sorry this is not the source. ![]() If you knew one of the founders you would perhaps have a hint, because he loved airplanes and had his pilot license. You might be tempted then to say we got the name from the Tomahawk RAF flown with the flying tigers over China during WWII.
Tomahawk RAFWell if you did you would be real close. So very close, but just not quite there. Actually the name was taken from a, new at the time, small aircraft pilot trainer. The Piper Tomahawk.
Piper TomahawkMany modern pilots have learned to fly in the Tomahawk. It was designed from the ground up with input from flight instructors around the world to be the ultimate trainer. We felt that since we started as fleet vehicle cleaners, and then we designed the Original Tomahawk to meet those needs, much like the way the piper Tomahawk was made, that we would so honor the piper Tomahawk. And it was so very appropriate. In the 17 years since FAA Certification, the Piper Tomahawk aircraft has "enjoyed a consistently good reputation for reliability and structural integrity". Just like the Original Tomahawk Spot Free Cleaning system has! |
